Call for papers
The annual Linguistic Landscape Workshop is the leading international meeting for interdisciplinary research on language in public space. After a long series of editions around the world, the 14th Linguistic Landscape Workshop (LL14) will take place in Madrid on September 6-8, 2023.
With Landscapes of utopia and dystopia as the thematic axis to articulate the conference, LL14 will explore the dystopian character of our daily reality, but also utopian imagination worldwide, as reflected in the linguistic landscape around us. We encourage contributions on how utopia and dystopia are constructed in public space; how people appropriate public spaces and which political subjects emerge; on the definition, nature, and function of utopian ideas; as well as on the prefigurative and performative forces of linguistic landscapes. As always, LL14 also welcomes contributions on other lines of work within the field of linguistic landscapes.
Evaluations of colloquia have concluded and acceptance has been notified to panel coordinators.
At this point we welcome submissions for individual papers via the Symposium platform:
Each paper will be allocated a 30-minute slot (20 for presentation and a further 10 minutes for discussion). Please submit a paper proposal (max. 300 words), 3 keywords, and names and affiliations of authors.
Papers to be included in a previously accepted colloquia will undergo individual evaluations as well. Please submit a paper proposal (max. 300 words), 3 keywords, names and affiliations of authors, and the title of the panel (please check with the coordinator of the panel to find out whether your panel has been accepted).
Deadline for individual papers (also papers within accepted colloquia): 1 March 2023.
As we acknowledge some researchers are usually excluded because of the cost of intercontinental travel or the exorbitant price of the conferences, LL14 will be a partially hybrid event, with selected sessions in streaming. However, we encourage all who are able to attend in person to enjoy face-to-face interaction during the academic and social events we are planning for the meeting, which will include a guided walk through the cityscapes of the vibrant city of Madrid. Unless requested otherwise in the submission, all contributions will be delivered on-site in person. Those who cannot participate on-site, or would strongly prefer to present online, please indicate so in your proposal.
English and Spanish are the conference languages, but papers can be delivered in any language. As no translation or interpretation services will be available, we encourage authors to present their work in the language of their choice with visual support in another language to facilitate comprehension.
Every abstract will be evaluated by the LL14 scientific committee on the basis of its contribution to the field of linguistic landscapes; its epistemic openness and innovative character; its relationship with the conference theme; and its methodological adequacy. The final selection of colloquia/papers, as well as the on-site/online allocation, will be made by the LL14 organizing committee according to the host capacity of the venue.
